The daily routine of getting ready for women in the 18th century was rather outrageous. Its quite shocking to see how many layers they had to apply just for one outfit. There wasn’t even a clear difference between the women getting dressed in the two videos. Both women applied a significant amount of clothing, however, I did notice the upper-class woman in the first video required a bit more additions. I’m not entirely sure she could have completed the entire set up, or finished in the same amount of time, without the assistance of the other women. I believe that the employment of so many layers indicates that in the eighteenth-century society was very formal. Comparing the style practiced in the eighteenth century to now its quite surprising how much its evolved and changed. I think the change partly has to do with how the values of society, as a whole, have changed over time. In the 18th century everything from the speech to gestures and to the ideals were all very formal and that has diminished over time. I think the other thing that lead the charge for the change was practicality. I think sometime over the years society also began to realize that with complex advancements in civilization, the need to dress like that wasn’t entirely necessary. It’s unnecessary to apply that many layers of clothing when you are attaining better materials and when technology is advancing. I think the disparities between the way people used to dress and how people dress themselves today cannot be determined from simple factors such as better or worse. They can only be analyzed through the most practical form of tailoring one’s self at that period in time. I believe that as society developed diverse views began to arise more often and this ultimately resulted in the wide variety of clothing businesses we have today.
