Blogs

For this final blog, you will place yourself in the mind and body of an 18c essay writer. After reading the selections from Addison and Steele, as well as the hybrid requirement primer on periodicals (text) and the (bizarre but informative) videos (link 1 and link 2) you will conceptualize and draft your own imaginary periodical. Your blog should include:

  1. The title of your periodical (and an explanation of what made you select this title; i.e. what it suggests about your periodical’s themes and topics)
  2.  Your target audience (do they belong to a particular gender? social class? location?)
  3. Your narrator (again: gender/class/location?; an 18c reader?; a contemporary reader?; think of tone and style also: are they funny? critical? conservative? liberal?)
  4. Sections you would include (advice? film/tv reviews? political commentary? cultural analysis? something else?)

Then, give us a taste of your periodical by writing a short essay (350 words) that would be included in the periodical’s inaugural issue. The essay should make reference to one or more of our readings this semester and address a single topic/theme of your choice. What you write about and how will depend on your answers for #2 and #3 above. You may consider any of the historical (e.g print culture, private/public sphere, inheritance, etc), social (e.g. marriage, friendship, parenting, conduct and morality), or psycho-sexual (e.g. rape culture; sexuality; interiority; self-discovery) issues we’ve discussed throughout the semester, but your essay should be appropriate to the choices you’ve made in designing your periodical as well as showcase your knowledge of the texts. If you’re creatively-minded, this short essay might also be a short story–in such case, I expect you to riff on a single theme/subject/character either by satirizing them (a la Shamela) or writing a brutally-honest, more realistic version.

Blogs are due before midnight on Monday, April 23.

letter writings

i first have to admit this task was a challenge for me, sometimes i forgot to write and other times i did not feel like  anything interesting happened during my day. I always write in the comfort of my bed, i turn on the night light and play some classical music and begin to write whatever i remember. Since i wanted to write to a special person i used Eleni even if the person in real life is not a female nor that is his name. I still used Eleni since i found the name beautiful. The first letter that i wrote was only one page but then the other days i wrote more than one page. I found the task of letter writing easier some days and other days i found it difficult. Many times i forgot what actually i was going to write and reflect on. I tried not to just throw out everything that happened in my day instead i took on one particular event that happened during that day and expressed to Eleni how i felt about it. For instance, in my third letter entry i mentioned how i was stressed at work but then i reflected on that same feeling. I always tried to write in between 7-9pm right after i arrived home. I also wrote the moment before i was going to bed, i found that i was more introspective when i wrote in between those hours. I never spent  more than 15 minutes writing, the most that i spent was 10 minutes and that was because i was very passionate with what happened during that day. Sometimes during the writing process i had to stop, just because i did not remember everything that happened during the day or i felt that i was not writing in chronological order like i wanted to. When i managed to remember every important event that happened during that day i went back to writing some more. I tried not to pause in the middle of writing as a result my ideas would go away and i would lose my flow. I never re-read any of my dairies i like to only read something if i feel emotionally in tuned with myself or else i would not be able to picture that day in my head again. My routine is very ordinary the only different events that i recorded was on friday and saturday when i went out with my friends, other than that the events are mostly work related.
