April 23

Housekeeping:

  • Project 2 draft due before midnight on Monday, April 30 to BB. You should have at least 4 pages completed (out of a total 5-7). Aim to have your argument as developed as possible and to incorporate at least one of the external sources I provided (you will need to use 2 in the final paper).
  • Your questions: I will answer them for our hybrid requirement/reading this week!

Group Presentation!

  • Any favorites? Why?
  • Gendered perspectives: let’s compare the Female Spectator and the (male) Spectator
  • How has this genre evolved into types of writing we still use today? In what ways is it different?

Thesis statement speed-dating!

Get your copies of your thesis statement and let’s form lines of chairs facing each other.

At the sound of the gong, you and the person facing you will exchange thesis statements. Here is how this works: you will have 5 minutes to read your partner’s thesis and whatever other writing they brought. Then, give them feedback on it. Some questions to consider addressing:

  • Is the sentence clearly stated? Do you you understand what it is saying? Does it avoid passive voice, vagueness, and generalizations?
  • Is there a clear argument? What you will expect from their paper based on the thesis?
  • If there are topic sentences, do they each make clear claims (rather than observations or summaries)? Do they connect to the thesis and advance the argument?
  • What suggestions might you give for revision?

Remember: you both need to give each other feedback, so be brief and get to the point!

When you hear the gong again, it’s time to move on. If you’re on a chair with your back to the door, you will stay put. If you’re facing the door, you will get up at the gong and move to the next person on your right. Start the process over. We will end once everyone has made a round through half the class or we’re out of time.
